PHOENIX -- Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading global technology distributor, today announced that its leadership in IT has been recognized by IDG's Computerworld. The magazine named Avnet CIO Steve Phillips as a 2011 "Premier 100 IT Leaders" honoree, a lifetime recognition award. "For the past five years, Steve and his team have excelled in partnering with the business to implement innovative IT solutions to drive growth opportunities for Avnet, respond to market changes and enhance customer service," said Rick Hamada, president and chief operating officer, Avnet, Inc. "This prestigious award validates our business-driven approach to IT and ability to harness the power of technology to become an even more efficient organization operationally."

Phillips joined Avnet as part of the company's acquisition of Memec and was named CIO in August 2005. Since that time, Phillips and his global IT team have deployed a series of IT-based projects to further Avnet's strategic imperatives of profitable growth and operational excellence. Most notably, the team successfully integrated more than 25 acquisitions, developed an e-commerce site tailored to the distribution industry and leveraged IT systems to improve the operational efficiency of Avnet's warehouses. Additionally, Phillips and his team have created a greener and more power efficient data center, deployed scalable IT platforms globally to help Avnet manage its growth, and enhanced Avnet's security. Each of these projects achieved significant business results for Avnet and helped the company operate more efficiently, often through process automation.

"The Premier 100 awards program honors an elite group of IT executives," said Scot Finnie, editor in chief of Computerworld. "In the face of the past few years of economic turmoil that for many meant budget cuts and staff downsizing, these 100 men and women continued to innovate and deliver measurable business value. They begin 2011 recharged and ready, positioning their departments and their businesses for speed and growth. We're pleased to honor the achievements of these 100 men and women who deliver strategic vision and seamless leadership through turbulent times."

The Premier 100 awards ceremony will be one of the highlights of Computerworld's annual Premier 100 IT Leaders Conference, being held March 6-8, 2011, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, Calif. Phillips will present at the conference in a session titled, "Enabling Growth By Acquisition: Creating an M&A Playbook for IT." Phillips will share insights into how Avnet's IT team has helped the company achieve fast and efficient business growth following more than 25 acquisitions in the last five years. The session will be held on March 8 at 10:30 a.m. PT.
